In this chapter, Layne suggests that the problem of kids not wanting to read "is that they have not been taught to value books" (pg.12). Do you agree with this statement? What about the concept of a "disengaged" reader as a result of the fact that "fostering a love of reading in kids is not a curricular objective" (pg. 5)? What are some things that you personally could do with the students that you come in contact with every day that might teach the value of books, foster the love of reading, and build motivation to read in young people? In what ways can we nurture students to become "complete readers" possessing both the skill and the will to read?
For those of you who don't know or have yet to be exposed to the works and writing of Dr. Steven L. Layne here is a small exert from one of his presentation via podcast :) ENJOY!
After viewing the podcast please post comments regarding your initial thoughts/reactions. Did his "talk" encourage you to open his book and start reading? What specifically caught your attention? |
