Layne outlines the “Buzz About Books” process and how it could look in the classroom. He suggests 2-3 times a week for 15 minutes which sounds reasonable, right? Yet he starts out the chapter posing this question, “Do you think it’s a good use of instructional time for us to allow time for and take part in discussions about books?” (pg.85). What do you think?

I think homeroom time is the best time for this or bus duty. Busy duty is when the students need to be quiet and a discussion where one person is talking at a time.

It sounds reasonable for some classes but I teach math. It is not at all reasonable for my class. Homeroom/Bus Duty is good in theory, however, usually there are so many interruptions and other necessary homeroom tasks that I feel the time can not be consistently utilized. I have mentioned before that I wish there were grade level books that addressed some of the content that we cover in 8th grade math but there just isn't...yet:)

I think it's a great idea, although I agree that it is probably best to do during homeroom and not every class. The thing I have found is that, when students start talking about books they've read, other students pay attention. Peer referrals go a long way.

I think that all of the math teachers agree. I would love to talk about the books that they are reading, but not enough time.

I definitely agree with all the math teachers as well. We have so much to cover in math and since I also teach S.S I feel as if I have so much I have to cover in such little time. I would love to incorporate some history book discussions in though. Homeroom would definitely be a great time to do this.
