Throughout this chapter, Layne describes various opportunities for students to celebrate books. His suggestions include the Golden Recommendation Shelf, First Read Club, Read Arounds, Café, Poetry, Comic, and Magazine Breaks, Newspaper Day, Club Read, and Picture Book of the Month. Of these suggested strategies, which one stood out to you? Was there anything that caught your attention and made you think of an idea that could easily be implemented at SMS? If so, what is your idea and how might we incorporate it into our school culture “to provide opportunities for students to engage with text through activities that generate some excitement about reading” (pg. 115).

Golden Recommendation Shelf would work best in the library after it has been shared on CNN. This would be a shelf were these books discussed on CNN could be found.

That's a good idea, Megan. We can definitely do that! I like the idea of teachers doing short book talks on CNN as well as students. I also like the idea of reading picture books and things like magazines. Students are reading but they don't see these things as "work."

This one was a little difficult for me due to subject matter and relivence. I like the Newspaper Day in portions. It reminded me of when I used to have students write narratives using specific vocabulary. They were compiled into mini books that they illustrated. I was very impressed with the results. I could incorporate this back into my lessons per nine weeks and have selections shared. I will have to look into optional publications as suggested in Newspaper Day. The best stories could also be shared on CNN.

I love the idea of comics/graphic novels. Students are still into that. Also, maybe they can come up with their own and publish it or have exerpts from it on CNN.

I like the Golden Recommendation Shelf. They could talk about it on CNN and in their classrooms or they could even talk about it in small groups.
